Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take to finish my website?

At the risk of sounding cliché, it really does depend on a number of different factors.

We do our best to provide clients with an accurate time frame for the completion of their project but the truth is every project is unique and sometimes the smallest things can make a huge difference in their completion. In addition the size and complextiy of a project, some of the most common factors that determine a projects time frame and completion date are:

  • Is the site static or dynamic?
  • How much and what kind of functionality will be required?
  • Is all of the content readily available or will it have to created and who will create it?
  • How dedicated is the client to providing all the deliverable in a timely manner?

To a certain degree, the timeframe is also determined by our current workload. In order to maintain a high level of quality for all each our clients and ensure that projects are completed in a timely fashion, we try not to have more than three projects running at any given time.

As a general rule of thumb -- smaller static sites can usually be completed in as little as 1 to 4 weeks, while larger, more complex or dynamic websites can take anywhere from 2 to 6 months for completion.

Do you offer hosting and domain name registration?

NonZero Studio offers both hosting and domain name registration to all of our design, redesign and development clients, usually at lower prices than they would find anywhere else without scrimping on the service.

Every site or package comes with 1 year web hosting & domain name registration FREE. The annual renewal fee for hosting is $54 ($4.50/month) for static websites and $90 ($7.50/month) for database driven sites. Primary domain name renewal is include in the annual hosting price as long and renewal of additional domain names is only $7.95 per domain.

Please not that, while our hosting services are comprehensive, they are only intended for our website clients. As access priveledges are not included at this time we do not provide hosting or domain registration as stand-alone services.

What if I already have a host for my website?

Every hosting account is different, so if you have already purchased hosting for your website, or you have an existing website that is hosted with another company please make sure you let us know who your host is and how to access your account so that we can be sure that it will meet your requirements before we begin working.

If changes to your existing account are required we will let you know exactly what those changes are and in most cases we can even handle the details for you.

While we do our best to play well with others it should be noted that, due to compatibility issues, unless you have / need a static website we cannot work with "free" hosting accounts.

If you choose to arrange or manage your own hosting service, we ask that you also manage your own domain name(s) as well. It makes things much simpler when domain names and hosting service are managed by the same person.

What is website accessibility and how does it apply to my site?

In many instances it is required by state or federal regulations that websites provide for universal access to visitors. It is critical, therefore, that page designs and templates as well as the content of your site are validated throughout the development process to ensure accessibility to all users.

We use the guidelines and techniques developed and maintained by the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) as a measure against which to test the accessibility of your pages.

Making sure that web sites are accessible and usable by people with disabilities is the focus of web accessibility. The key efforts in this area arise out of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in the form of the Web Accessibility Initiative. WAI efforts are focused on developing tools and best practices that promote the development of universally accessible web sites. Most validation tools use the WAI guidelines as the standard against which to measure sites.

How will my website be coded and will it be easy to edit?

If you will be working with the code of your website after delivery, you will be happy to know that we use Adobe Dreamweaver in all of our work, even in template modification & PSD to HTML projects. Additionally, we include detailed commenting in the code to make it even easier to understand and edit.

Although all HTML and CSS markup is much the same to web browsers, how the markup is formatted and what web authoring tools the developer used can make a huge difference in how the code looks to a human reader.

Consider the two code examples below:

Example 1

<table summary=”HR Committee Schedule, FY 2008”>
<tr>
<th>Meeting Dates 2008</th>
<th>Agenda Item Submission Deadline</th>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Monday, Oct 6, 2008</td>
<td>Friday, Oct 3, 2008</td>
</tr>
</table>

Example 2

<table summary="HR Committee Schedule, FY 2008"> <tr> <th>Meeting Dates 2008</th> <th>Agenda Item Submission Deadline</th> </tr> <tr> <td>Monday, Oct 6, 2008</td> <td>Friday, Oct 3, 2008</td> </tr> </table>

The two code examples are exactly the same to a web browser, but most people find Example 1 much easier to read and understand.

Some development software produces code that is nearly impossible for humans to read without significant reformatting (imagine hundreds of lines like those in Example 2). Other programs (such as Adobe Dreamweaver) produce code that is well formatted and easy to read, which can make a huge difference when maintaining your site.

If you will be using an editor other than Adobe Dreamweaver, please let us know ahead of time so that we can develop the code for maximum compatibility with your maintenance tools.
